Gambia is situated on the Atlantic coast in westernmost Africa and surrounded on three sides by Senegal. The country is narrowly stretched from the north to the south and the Gambia River flows through Gambia on its way to the Atlantic. There are many tribes in Gambia with Mandinka most populous along with Fula, Wolof and Jola. Each tribe still has its own language and tradition. Gambians greet strangers in an Islam manner, saying “May peace be with you” When they say hello to each other, they distinguish strangers from acquaints and have different greeting words by place and time. However, they never miss the word “peace”. Music, songs and old stories take up very important parts in the Gambian culture. They always sing while fishing in the river or harvesting. And every tribe has its own “Griots- story teller” who performs dramas.
