Lying on the Atlantic in the southern part of West Africa, Liberia has become the first republic in the African Continent. Liberia means a Land of the Free. It suffered from the 14 year-long civil war that had stared in 1989. However, with the station of UN peacekeepers, the country successfully held a general election. Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, the outstanding African female president elected in 2006, is doing her every effort in reconstructing the destroyed social infrastructure and reviving the economy. Liberia consists of diverse tribes such as Mel, Kwa, Mande-Fu and Mande-Tan along with other 12 ethnic tribes. Each tribe language is being used more generally than English, the nation’s official language. Masks and especially quilt are Liberia’s most representative handicraft work and most frequently given as gifts.
