Sierra Leone, on the Atlantic Ocean in West Africa, borders the Atlantic Ocean. Its name is originated from a Portuguese word meaning ‘Lion Mountain’. Sierra Leone has lot of reserves of bauxite, diamond, iron ore and other mineral resources. Because of its high quality diamond, this nation had to suffer a civil war from 1991 to 2001. When the war ended, the UN and the Sierra Leone government have agreed to open a War Crimes Court to punish the war criminals and spared no effort in reconstructing the national economy and establishing social security. There are major 16 tribes in this nation. The most populous Mende people live in the south and the east and the second populous Temne people are in the north along with the third populous Limba people. Other 12 tribes dwell in the north or along the eastern coastal lines. About 60% of its population believes in Islam, observing the Islamic decree. The representative foods of Sierra Leone include foo-foo and cassava made of flour and enjoyed along with vegetable and meat. They sometimes sprinkle the cassava powder on rice.
