Colombia is the only country in South America that is bounded by both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The country is the second largest coffee producer in the world next to Brazil. The character that resembles the traditional coffee farmer of Colombia, ‘Juan Valdez,’ is famous all around the world. Colombia is also the world’s largest emerald producer. The country makes more than 80% of top-class emeralds circulated in the world market. Flower industry has also developed steadily in Columbia, and today, the country is the second largest exporter of cut flowers next to Netherlands. In the capital Bogota, there is the world’s greatest gold museum. In the museum, more than 36 thousand pieces of gold work are exhibited, including bracelets, earrings, and necklaces that were made before the Spain Conquest Era. In Zepaquira city, which is about 50km (30ml) away from Bogota, there is a salt cathedral built on a salt mine. This cathedral was constructed by more than 100 sculptors and miners for four years. The great salt cross and the ‘Creation of Adam’ by Michelangelo in the cathedral catch the eyes of tourists. Some of the celebrities from Colombia include the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature Gabriel Marquez, and the renowned painter and sculptor Fernando Botero.
