Located on Central America, Costa Rica is a country where the north is bounded by Nicaragua, while the south by Panama. Costa Rica is a constitutional republic, and based on the Constitution of Peace revised in 1949, the country has no army. More than 50% of Costa Rica’s territory is covered with mountains and forests. Three mountain ranges penetrate the country, including the Nacaste Range stretching from Northwest to Southeast, the Central Mountain Range and the Talamanca Range. As the plateau formed on the center of the range has nice weather and rich land, the major cities of Costa Rica, including the capital San Jose and Cartago, as well as most of the country’s population are concentrated in this plateau. Costa Rica has many active volcanoes. Some of the famous volcanoes are the Poas Volcano, which is the greatest volcano in the world, and the Arenal Volcano which is still very active. With opened hot springs nearby, the Arenal volcano is especially popular among tourists. Coffee is the major product of Costa Rica. Most of the coffees are produced in the central plateau area close to San Jose where the soil and climate are optimal for cultivating coffees. The best quality coffees of Costa Rica are not only produced by such natural condition, but also by thorough quality control procedures and continuous researches on coffees.
