The name ‘El Salvador’ means ‘The Savior’ in Spanish. As the name shows, most of the El Salvadorans are Catholics. Although El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America, the population density of the country is one of the highest in the world. As El Salvador is located on the circum-Pacific earthquake belt, the country suffers routine earthquakes. Volcanoes can also be seen around the country. The highest volcano in El Salvador is a dormant volcano called, ‘Santa Ana.’ Izalco Volcano, which still blows out steam, is also one of the famous volcanoes in the country. El Salvador is archeologically recognized as one of the representative regions of the Mayan Civilization in Central America. It has been proved that the Mayan Civilization prospered for more than 1,000 years in the El Salvadoran region by evidences such as the ‘Step Pyramids’ in ‘Tazumal’ and ‘San Andres.’ In the Guzman National Museum, tourists can see the major remains of the Mayan Civilization discovered in El Salvador. In the capital San Salvador, a festival called ‘The Festival of August’ opens every year from the end of July to the beginning of August. In the festival, natives from each region of the country show their traditional dances. Although this traditional festival used to focus on El Salvadorans before, it is now famous enough to represent El Salvador, attracting many foreigners.
