Greenland is an island country close to the North Pole. Most of Greenland’s territory is covered with perpetual snow. Although the southern part of the country enjoys a relatively rich amount of sunlight, the northern part of the country is dark throughout the year, difficult to find any sunlight. Greenland has some natural phenomena that can only be observed in Polar Regions. Among these phenomena, the northern lights, or the aurora, are famous for their unique beauty. The northern lights are created by the reaction between the air and the electric particles radiated from the sun. The lights decorate the sky with various colors of green and red. Most of the Greenlanders are born between the natives of Greenland and European immigrants. The natives of Greenland are often called Eskimos, meaning ‘People who eat raw fish.’ However, the natives don’t like this term. Instead, they call themselves using the word ‘Inuit,’ meaning ‘human’ in the Inuit language. The traditional clothes of Greenland are made from the skin of animals captured by hunting, and women with outstanding skills of making clothes that can withstand the cold weather are respected by Greenlanders. However, as going through the 17th ~ 18th century, more and more Greenlanders started wearing clothes made with wool rather than leather. In specially occasions such as Christmas, Easter, wedding ceremonies or the entrance ceremonies for kids, men in Greenland wear trousers called ‘Holmensklæde,’ while women wear ‘Anorak’ which is made with silk.
