Guyana means ‘The Land of Many Waters’ in the language of American Indians. 50% of the country’s population are Indians, while 30% Africans and the rest Europeans and aborigines. This intermixed organization of Guyanese population has created a unique Guyanese culture combining the cultures of various ethnic backgrounds. Guyana is famous for the Kaieteur Falls, which boasts a grand and magnificent scene comparable with the Niagara Falls and the Victoria Falls. To visit this waterfall from the capital Georgetown, tourists must walk through a jungle filled with exotic plants and animals for 3~5 days. The name of Kaieteur Falls has a legend, saying that chief Kai of the old Patamona tribe sacrificed himself in the waterfalls to save the tribe. ‘Kaieteur’ is the combination of the name ‘Kai’ and the term ‘Teur,’ meaning waterfalls. Guyana is also famous for having the most expensive post stamp in the world, ‘The Guyanese One Cent.’ This post stamp was a provisional issued in 1858. Today, there is only one left in the world, and for such scarcity, the presumed value of this post stamp is appx. $ 3.7 million USD.
