Jamaica is located in the third largest island of the Caribbean Sea. The name of the country comes from ‘Xaymaca,’ a term used by the native Arawak during the 15th century meaning the ‘Land of Forest and Water.’ Jamaica is the origin of Reggae music. The Jamaican reggae musician, Bob Marley, enjoyed tremendous popularity from all around the world. In his hometown of Nine Mile stands the Nine Mile Museum, where a ceremony to cherish the memory of this great musician is held on his birthday of every year, February 6th. Along with tourism, the economy of Jamaica is led by exporting mineral resources such as bauxite and alumina. Coffees produced in Blue Mountain, Jamaica are also recognized as one of the best quality coffees. These coffees are especially loved by Japanese, and more than 80% of them are exported to Japan. Among the famous tourists’ spot of Jamaica, Dunn’s River Falls with a nickname, ‘Niagara of the Caribbean Sea,’ is most popular. One of the famous Jamaican scholars is Stuart Hall, who is globally renowned for his studies in cultural studies.
