Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America. The name of the country comes from ‘Nicarao,’ a chief of the natives who lived around the country’s territory in early 16th century. With countless volcanoes and lakes, Nicaragua is often called the ‘Country of Volcanoes and Lakes.’ The ‘Nicaraguan Lake,’ or ‘Cocibolca’ in the tongues of Nicaraguans, is the largest lake in Central America. Agriculture takes up a major part of the Nicaraguan economy, and the major exporting item of the country is coffee. There is even a coffee museum in Matagalpa, the main region of Nicaraguan coffee production. Nicaraguan rum is also very famous. ‘Flor de Caña’ is a Nicaraguan rum brand well known around the world. Nicaragua well preserves a rich traditional culture. One of the most famous cultural heritages of Nicaragua is El Güegüense, which is a satirical drama played during the San Sebastian Festival every year (January 17th ~ 27th). By UNESCO, El Güegüense was registered as a Masterpiece of Oral Tradition and Intangible Heritage. Nicaragua is also famous for its high levels of literature, especially poems. One of the country’s famous poets, Ruben Dario (1867~1916) have made great influence to the Central/South American literature.
