As Panama is located on the land bridge connecting North and South America and as the Panama Canal connects the two great oceans of Pacific and Atlantic, the country is called the ‘Crossroads of the World.’ Panama Canal contributes greatly to the country’s economy, not only by collecting tolls from ships but also by raising tourism and service industries. Due to the geographical advantage of being located on the intersection of two continents, Panama has more than 950 kinds of birds and 1,500 kinds of trees, making the country an excellent spot for eco-tourism. Especially, in Darien National Park, tourists can see more than 500 kinds of birds, including the harpy eagle which is the national bird of Panama as well as one of the biggest eagles in the world. Darien National Park was registered as UNESCO’s World Heritage in 1981. Meanwhile, the port city Portobello opens the ‘Feast Day of the Black Christ’ every October 21st. In this day, more than 60 thousand people from in and out of the country visit the city to honor the statue of the black Christ as big as life. Visitors usually wear purple velvet clothes during their visit.
