Paraguay is an inland country located on the center of South America. The country shares its border with Argentina, Brazil, and Bolivia. The official languages of Paraguay are Spanish and Guarani, the language of the native Guarani tribe. Guarani is commonly used by Paraguayans in their everyday lives. In Guarani, the name ‘Paraguay’ means ‘the river which gave birth to the ocean.’ As shown in the name of the country, rivers play an important role in Paraguay. The most famous river in Paraguay, the Paraguay River, flows across the country from north to south. By this river, the country is mainly divided into the east and west region, which show significant differences not only in geographical features but also in many aspects. In the Parana River which flows to the Atlantic Ocean, there is the Itaipu Dam with the greatest hydraulic power in the world. This dam is visited by many tourists. The culture of Paraguay combines the cultures of the native Guarani tribe and the Spanish immigrants. The characteristics of this unique culture can be observed in many objects, especially in the famous Paraguayan ñandutí laces where the European lacing skills are combined with the Guarani culture.
