Suriname is a country located on the north part of South America with an official name, ‘the Republic of Suriname.’ The country shares its border with Guyana, Brazil and French Guiana. As the population of the country is formed with various races, including Indians, Creoles, Javanese, Maroons, mixed-bloods, American Indians, Chinese, etc, Suriname has diverse languages, foods, and cultures. Unique in South America, Suriname even has a high ratio of Hindus and Muslims besides Roman Catholics and Protestants. The north and south region of the country each has a distinct topography and climate. Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the north region has a large coastal plain where most of the country’s population lives in. As going through the central savanna region to move south, an area of tropical rain forest appears. About 90% of the country’s territory is covered with mountains and forests, where more than 1,000 kinds of trees and many wild animals such as jaguars, armadillos, and otters live in there. UNESCO appointed the nature conservation area of Suriname as World Heritage in 2000. Soccer is the most popular sports in Suriname. The country produced many great soccer players such as Ruud Gullit.
