Official name of Brunei is the Negara Brunei Darussalam. Brunei is located on the north-west coast of the island of Borneo. It is an Islamic State where the Sultan holds the power. Brunei is the country which respects Islamic traditions the most in Southeast Asia. To protect the religious tradition, it designates the Religious Department and has strict rules, such as the prohibition of alcohol. More than 60% of its population use Malay as the official language and keep the Malay tradition. Brunei is one of the world’s smallest countries in terms of territory, but boasts abundant natural gas and resources and is economically prosperous. Since it introduced the pension system in 1955, all elderly people over 60 and the disabled have received the compensation, and all citizens have received the complementary medical services. The average life expectancy of the country is over 70. Brunei charges no educational fees to the people from elementary school through universities.
