India is the birthplace of Buddhism and Hinduism. Hinduism has a great influence on the Indian society and on the creation of the Caste System. Indians are divided into classes from the moment of birth. Top three castes are Brahmins (priesthood), Kshatriya (governing and warrior) and Vaishya (commercial and agricultural); lower castes include Shudra (artisan and laborer). This system restricts Indians in choosing marriage partners and vocations. The Caste System is illegal and gradually disappearing in metropolitan areas. It is still considered as an important social system. Asian’s first Nobel Laureate Targor (1861~1941) and Mahatma Gandhi (1869~1948), the leader of the Indian independent movement, were both born in India. Recently, India is emerging as an IT powerhouse. Major software companies are rushing into the country to establish the development institutes in India, making India a world-class software exporting nation.
