Although the official name of this country is Japan, most people in Japan love to call their native country “Nihon”. “Nihon” means the “Origin of the Sun” in Japanese. Japan is an island nation in the East Asian region. It consists of 4 major islands including Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku and Hokkaido. It is also a mountainous country, and even there are volcanoes. It was the Yamato government in the late 4th and early 5th centuries that unified the country. Events in the 16th century had the greatest influence on modern Japanese history. The Tokugawa (or Edo) period and the Musado Spirit (knighthood) were established in this century. Musado Spirit refers to the duty knights should obey, and an exact understanding of the meaning helps to appreciate Japan. Today, Japan is the world’s second largest economic powerhouse with the technology industry in the lead. Japan is famous for its automobile, home appliances, and robot industries, boasting the state-of-the-art technological prowess.
