Official name of Laos is the Lao People's Democratic Republic. The landlocked country, Laos, is located on the Indochinese Peninsula and bounded by Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, China and Myanmar. This country has diverse ethnic groups, and most are Buddhist. The Mekong River, the world’s 12th longest river, flows across the country. The Mekong River extends through many countries in the Indochina Peninsula, and most of its length is in Laos. Many Laotians engage in farming in the fertile areas near the River. Pimai, which is held in mid-April, is the most famous and popular water festival. To celebrate the Lao New Year, men and women of all ages bless each other by pouring water. Luang Prabang, the 600-year ruling dynasty of Laos, is especially famous for this festival.
