Malaysia consists of two main parts: East Malaysia lies on the island of Borneo and West Malaysia is on the Malay Peninsula. The country is a federation of thirteen states. Malaysia is a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, multi-religious and multi-lingual country, made up of mostly Malay (more than 50%), Chinese (26%), Indians (8%) and other ethnic groups. Most Malaysians are Muslim, while the Chinese ethnics believe in Buddhism or Taoism, and the Indian ethnics are Hindus. The official language is Bahasa Malaysia (Malay); Chinese dialects, including Malayalam Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam are widely spoken among each ethnic group. Most Malaysians speak English. Despite the diversity, Malaysians live in a harmonious environment, enjoying various cultural and religious festivals around the year. Malaysians are also proud of their harmonious coexistence of diverse Asian cultures and religions and promote their country as Truly Asia.
