Qatar is the only peninsular country on the Arabian Peninsula. Since it is surrounded by the sea on three sides, there are many sandy beaches across the nation. The geography of Qatar consists of flat rocky surfaces. Before the appearance of oil, this country was famous for pearls, even being called ‘the Land of Pearl.’ As an oil-producing country, it exports oil and natural gas and is the only Gulf country that provides Israel with oil. Due to the traditional influence of Bedouin or the nomad culture, most Qatarians have a strong national spirit, and they cherish poems and songs based on its culture. The world-class Arabian news company “Al Jazeera” broadcasts from Qatar. Currently, “Al Jazeera” provides round-the-clock news service in Arabic and boasts more than half of all Arabian viewers around the world, including 200,000 listeners in the US. Most people live in Doha, the capital, which has become famous as the site of the 2006 Doha Asian Games and other international conferences.
