Singapore is an island nation, which is located on the southern end of the Malay Peninsular and the nearby islands. Its population consists of Chinese, Malays, Indians, Pakistanis and Europeans, and each of the ethnic groups have its own independent cultures. Singapore is a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, multi-religious and multi-lingual country. Diverse religions, including Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism and Christian, also coexist. The people of Singapore use Chinese, Malay, Tamil and English. They cherish language education, being provided the dual language education services. All Singaporeans learn their own native language and English. Influenced by the multi-cultural society, Singlish has been created and widely spoken among its people. Former prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew (1923~) led the smallest country in Southeast Asia into today’s Singapore. Mr. Lee cleared the corruption, attracted foreign companies and financial agencies, and eliminated virtually all tariff barriers during his 26 years in power. Singapore has developed into the Southeast Asian’s hub of the finance, transportation and logistics.
