Official name of Thailand is the Kingdom of Thailand. Thailand means the Land of Liberty in Thai. The people of Thailand hold a high respect to the King and the royal family. In particular, many Thais wear yellow suits on Mondays to pay their respect to the King. Yellow represents the color of Monday, the day that the present king, Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX; 1946~) was born. December 5th, the Kings birthday, is celebrated as the Fathers day. Since most Thais (more than 90%) believe in Buddhism, Buddhism has a great influence on the lifestyle of Thais. The elephant is the national animal of Thailand, and March 13th is celebrated as the National Day of Elephant. Elephant riding is one of the major tourist attractions for foreign visitors. Thailand once ranked by the World Tourism Organization as 19th in the list of the world major tourism destinations. Muay Thai (Thai Boxing), the national sport of Thailand, is widely enjoyed in many countries around the world.
