About 70% of Turkmenistan is the desert, chiefly the Kara-Kum Desert. ‘Merv Relic’ (1999) was designated by UNESCO and became very famous all across the world. Boasting the 4000 years of its history, it was the key point of the Silk Road, linking Persia and the Central Asia. Turkmenistan, bordering the Caspian Sea, is also called the “Second Mid East” since it has abundant amount of natural resources and oil: oil deposit (5th), natural gas (3rd) mineral resources (3rd). The carpet industry, one the major traditional industries in Turkmenistan, has now become a part of the art industry. The carpets are widely used by the Turkmenistans to protect themselves from the cold weather. Carpets had been spread on carriages for centuries. The distinct pattern of Turkmenistan carpets reflects the life-style of Turkmenistans, and the national flag is even printed to distinguish the unique pattern.
