Yemen consists of coastal areas, an extension of highlands and the Red Sea. It is well-known as the ‘Lucky Arabia’ because it could accumulate great wealth from trading the incense and the frankincense over the centuries. Later, it became famous for the coffee trade, and the world’s famous coffee ‘Yemen-Mocha’ is named after the port. The capital city, Sanaa (UNESCO Cultural Heritage site), reminds people of the Arabian city in the Middle Ages because there are no modern-style buildings. Out of Sanaa, in areas where the central government power does not reach, patriarchs have the ruling authority. The people of Yemen are very proud of themselves because of the fact that they are the descendants of the Queen of Sheba, the great woman who competed with King Solomon to determine who was wiser. Even today, many men still wear traditional clothes and “Jambiya” (a short sword of Arab origin).
