Armenia is a country near the Caspian Sea. The country shares borders with Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iran, and Georgia. The first kingdom in this area was ‘Urartu,’ which prospered around 9th century B.C. The climax of this kingdom came around B.C. 80, when it built an empire connecting the Caspian Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. In the year 301, Armenia became the first country to establish Christianity as the country’s religion. Even today, most of the Armenians are Christians. The Armenian language is known to be created by a priest of the Orthodox Church called Mesrop Mashtotz around the year 405. Due to centuries of war and colonial occupation, many Armenians have left the country to live in foreign areas. As of 2007, only about three million Armenians live in Armenia, while about eight million Armenians live in other countries such as Russia or France. Although living in foreign areas, Armenians are putting many efforts to develop their homeland, and each year they are returning back to their country one after another. Yerevan, the Capital of the country, is located near Mt. Ararat known to be the first place where the Biblical figure Noah arrived after the Flood.
