Especially, the city Paphos, selected as UNESCO’s World Heritage in 1980, is known to be the birthplace of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty from the Greek mythology. Paphos is also known to be the city where the sculptor Pygmalion married his masterpiece, which turned into human by the mercy of Aphrodite. Later, Pygmalion and his masterpiece gave birth to a daughter called Paphos. Kourion and Salamis are also some of the famous ancient cities in Cyprus. Thanks to the rich cultural heritage, the beautiful Mediterranean seashore, the fresh climate and the geographical merits of locating in the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa, Cyprus has a large tourism industry. In fact, tourism plays the most important part in the country’s economy. Cyprians cherish cultural life. Since 1993, the country has been opening an international festival called ‘Kypria’ every year. The festival is filled with various performances of operas, dramas and dances.
