Located on the intersection where Asia and Europe meet, Georgia shares its border with Russia, Turkey, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. The people of Georgia call their country ‘Sakartvelo,’ after the name of Kartlos who is known to be the founder of Georgia. The history of Georgia is about 4,000 years long, and its language was formed around fifth century B.C. Producing more than 500 kinds of grapes, Georgia is one of the countries with the longest history of making wine. Today, the country still uses a unique and traditional method to make fine wine, the most important product that Georgia exports. 40% of Georgia’s land is covered with forests where 4,000~4,500 kinds of plants exuberate. Among these plants, about 300 kinds are found only in Georgia. Many animals also live in the forests of Georgia. Especially, there are more than 360 kinds of birds in the Georgian forests, attracting many ornithologists and bird lovers into the country. Georgia is also the homeland of the old Soviet Union’s leaders, such as Iosif Vissarionovich Stalin and Eduard Shevardnadze.
