The official name of Germany is the ‘Federal Republic of Germany.’ The current form of a federal republic comes from the country’s tradition of a decentralization system where lords used to govern each local region. After World War II, the country was split to East and West Germany. Then, in 1990, the country was unified again. Realizing a dramatic growth of economy, Germany is called the ‘Economic Engine of Europe.’ Currently, the GDP of Germany ranks third in the world, following the US and Japan (Source: World Bank, 2006). The core industry that led this economic revival of Germany was the automobile industry. German automobile brands such as BMW, Mercedes Benz and Volkswagen are very famous around the world. The music, literature and philosophy of Germany also contributed greatly in the development of the world’s culture. Musicians that are loved even today, such as Beethoven, Brahms, Bach, etc, are all from Germany. Writers such as Goethe and Hermann Hesse are also German. German people are famous for their love towards beer. Every year in Munich, the third largest city in Germany, a beer festival called the ‘Oktoberfest’ opens. During the festival, countless visitors come to drink beer and enjoy roasted chicken and sausages.
