Iceland is an island country isolated far away to the northwest direction from the European Continent. Contacting the Arctic Circle, 11% of the country’s territory is covered with glacier. However, the average winter temperature of Iceland is relatively high (1°C or 33.8 °F), because the warm Gulf Stream flows near the island. Iceland has many volcanoes which erupt every 5~10 years. Geysers can also be seen around the country. Especially, the Geysers of Geysir and Strokkur spring up as high as 20m, and many tourists visit Iceland to see this spectacle. Among the many hot springs in the country, the Blue Lagoon Open Springs is the most popular vacation spot. The people of Iceland live along seashores, and many of them work in fishery. Because the country is located near the North Atlantic Ocean, various kinds of whales, including mink whales, can be easily observed, making the country a good place for whale viewing. One of the famous celebrities from Iceland is the singer and actress Bjork. Born in Reykjavik, the Capital of Iceland, Bjork is famous in and out of the country for showing the traditions and zests of Iceland.
