Macedonia is an Eastern European country famous for being the homeland of Mother Teresa (1910~1997), respected by the world for being the ‘Saint of the Gutters.’ The monument of Mother Teresa is located in Skopje, the Capital of Macedonia, where her childhood house used to stand. The house was destroyed by an earthquake. Mustapha Pasha Mosque, an extravagant Muslim temple built in the 15th century, is also a famous tourist spot of Skopje. Meanwhile, Ohrid is a city appointed as UNESCO’s World Heritage in 1979 along with Ohrid Lake. Ohrid Lake is known to be one of the oldest lakes in the world. With numerous religious buildings such as the Saint Sophia Cathedral, the Pantheleimon Cathedral and the Clement Cathedral, Ohrid was once called the ‘Jerusalem of the Slav.’ The front yard of the Saint Sophia Cathedral is used as the stage for the Ohrid Summer Festival, one of Macedonian’s largest music and drama festivals opened every year. The Balkan Festival of Folk Songs & Dances is also opened in Ohrid every July. Many ethnic groups visit this festival from the neighboring Balkan countries.
