Known as ‘The hidden pearl of the Mediterranean Sea,’ Montenegro is a small country located on the shore of the Adriatic Sea. Montenegro used to be a state country constituting the old Yugoslavia. Then, in 2003, the country established a national federation of Serbia-Montenegro. However, in June 2006, Serbia-Montenegro split and Montenegro became an independent country through a national referendum. In Italian, the word ‘Montenegro’ means a ‘Black Mountain.’ The name of the country comes from the thick and black woods of Mt. Lovcen. Being the symbol of Montenegro, Mt. Lovcen was appointed as National Park in 1952. On top of the mountain lies the royal tomb of Petar II Petrovic Njegos (1813~51), who is respected as both a great king and a poet. Thanks to the emerald Adriatic Sea and the wonderful sight that the black mountains make along the shoreline, the tourism industry of the country is enjoying a high growth rate every year. Major tourists’ spot of Montenegro include Kotor city, a center of Medieval Arts and commerce. The city was appointed as UNESCO’s World Heritage in 1979.
