Portugal is a country located on the west end of the European Continent. The Portuguese music ‘Fado,’ which is famous for its sad tone, was spread out to the world by Amalia Rodrigues (1920~1999) known to be the ‘Queen of Fado.’ Amalia received great love by the Portuguese people. When she died, the Prime Minister of the country announced a state funeral for three days. The Portuguese people have great passion towards soccer. The legendary soccer hero of the country, Eusebio (1942~, known as the ‘Black Leopard’) is still respected by many people around the country. The Portuguese people are proud of Sporting and Benfica, which are noble soccer clubs from the Capital Lisbon. Meanwhile, the harbor city Belem is known as the place where the famous Portuguese pioneer Vasco da Gama (1469~1524) started his journey to India. The city shows the past of Portugal as a powerful oceanic empire. In Belem stands the Tower of Belem, which was constructed to celebrate Vasco da Gama’s expedition. The Monastery of the Hieronymites is also located in Belem. These two remains were selected as UNESCO’s World Heritage in 1983.
