Located on the northeastern region of the Italian peninsula, San Marino is the third smallest country in the world next to Vatican and Monaco. The name of the country comes from Marinus, who made a community on the top of Mt. Titano during the 4th century. This community became the origin of San Marino. San Marino is organized with nine castles, which represent each administrative area. In each castle, there is a flag symbolizing the castle itself as well as the leader governing the castle. More than half of the country’s GDP is taken up by tourism. Such strength in tourism is not only created by the government’s active support, but also by the beautiful view of the Adriatic shoreline from Mt. Titano and the medieval buildings in the country. Moreover, as the country doesn’t impose duties on watches, perfumes, liquors etc, many Europeans including Italians visit the country for duty-free shopping. The beautiful post stamps and unique coins issued by San Marino are also famous around the world, attracting many tourists to the country’s Coin & Stamp Museum.
